Rangers have announced that a statue to honour legendary manager Walter Smith will be unveiled at Ibrox in the New Year. Smith passed away from cancer aged 73 in October 2021 and is the second most successful manager in the club's history after Bill Struth. The former Dundee United defender led Rangers to ten Scottish League titles, five Scottish Cups and six Scottish League Cups over two spells at the club, having replaced Graeme Sounness as manager in 1991 before leaving to manage Everton in 1998. Smith returned to Ibrox in 2007 following the sacking of Frenchman Paul Le Guen and would stay in charge for four years before his retirement in at the end of the 2010-11 season. In his second spell at Ibrox Smith would also guide Rangers to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2007-08, losing to Dick Advocat's Zenit Saint-Petersburg side after an incredible run which saw the Light Blues overcome the likes of Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina.
