Match Review: Rangers 3-1 Kilmarnock..

Rangers started the new year with three points with a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on the 53rd anniversary of the Ibrox stadium disaster.

Youngster Ross McCausland opened the scoring a few minutes before half time, after an excellent through ball from Cyriel Dessers, after Dessers himself had gone close to scoring twice earlier in the half.

A few minutes later and Rangers doubled their advantage after a brilliant volleyed goal from the impressive Abdallah Sima ensured the Gers went in 2-0 up at the interval - a score line which probably flattered the hosts after some impressive periods of play by Kilmarnock in which Kyle Vassell was denied by Jack Butland having found himself one-on-one with the Rangers keeper.

Killie would pull a goal back from a Danny Armstrong penalty in the 58th minute after John Souttar's handball led to a VAR review, before Todd Cantwell made it 3-1 in the 61st minute following a low ball in from Ridvan Yilmaz.

Philippe Clement: "It was an exceptional goal [by Sima]. The finish was really world class. I give [McCausland] a lot of minutes because he deserves it, he performs, he works for the team. He's growing and growing".

Following Celtic's 3-0 victory at St Mirren, Rangers remain 8 points adrift of their bitter rivals, albeit with two games in hand going into the winter break. The Light Blues will make the short trip to face Dumbarton on Saturday, January 20 in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
